“Everything about our relationship is perfect, except for one thing: his mom.” That was Stephanie Ressler’s verdict on her own love life in Season 1, and six years later it still reads like the whole show in one sentence. Mike Boornazian, 25, and Stephanie Ressler, 25, had met working in media and moved in together. The only obstacle had a name: his mother, Liz Micale, 49.

October 2020: The Couple Who Moved In Together

When TLC introduced the trio in October 2020, the dynamic was set in the first episode. Mike and Stephanie were already living together, and Liz did not hide her position: she said in an interview that she would never let Mike leave her. Stephanie wanted Liz’s blessing to marry Mike, but not at the price of waiting on him hand and foot. The standoff was polite, daily, and total, and it put Mike on the list of sons ranked by how close they are to cutting the cord.

What made Liz different was stamina, not volume: she never needed a screaming match, because she never left the room. When Stephanie pushed for a proposal, Liz pushed back, and fans started posting that Liz should, in their words, go get a life. Stephanie would not marry Mike until he put her first. Season 2 kept the pressure on, and Liz’s confession that Stephanie was taking her son away became the season’s thesis, one of the wildest mom interventions the show ever filmed.

December 2020: The LA Job That Forced the Choice

The Season 1 finale forced the choice Mike had spent a season avoiding. Stephanie had been offered a talk-show job in Los Angeles, and the couple sat Liz down to break the news. Liz cried, and for one scene all three were honest at once. Mike agreed to move. Stephanie assured Liz the three of them would always be a team. It was the closest the triangle ever came to a truce.

The Promise: Three Years and a Truce That Held

For a time, the truce held. In an April post marking three years together, Mike celebrated publicly, and in an interview around that time the pair confirmed they were still together, had not moved to Los Angeles, and still got on well with Liz. That was the last clean “still together” on the public record.

September 2024: The Reports That Say It Ended

Then the record went quiet, and when it spoke again it said something else. A September 2024 update from MEAWW reported that Mike and Stephanie were no longer together, and that Mike was now dating Los Angeles artist Jennifer O’Brien, the pair routinely sharing photos of each other on Instagram. The Cinemaholic’s update the same summer agreed: the couple had parted ways, with Stephanie focused on her TV producer career. No wedding ever happened. No announcement, no farewell post, just silence where the engagement used to be.

November 2026: Two Stories, No Referee

Two stories, no referee. One version, from the 2021 interview, says they beat Liz and stayed together. The other, from the 2024 reporting, says Liz finally got the distance she wanted, and Mike rebuilt his life in Los Angeles with someone new. Neither has settled it publicly since, and with Season 5 still unconfirmed by TLC, no reunion episode is coming to hand down a verdict. The show’s first great triangle ended the way most of its triangles end: not with a wedding or a fight, but with silence, and with everyone still arguing over wife or mom first.

So which version do you believe: the interview that said they made it, or the 2024 reports that say Liz won? And if Mike really did leave Stephanie for a new life in Los Angeles, was that his choice at last, or his mother’s, four years late?
