Matt McAdams posted a photo of himself, his mother Kelly and his girlfriend Devon, all three smiling, and wrote that “mom’s ready for the ride.” The same man once admitted he took “a coward’s way out” of his breakup with Brittany Taylor. That is what freedom looks like on I Love a Mama’s Boy — and almost nobody else here has found it. With Season 5 still unconfirmed, according to reports, here are the nine sons ranked by how close they are to cutting the cord.
No. 1 — Matt McAdams: Finally Picked a Side
Matt’s road here was the longest: four years with Kim inside Kelly’s world, living in Kelly’s house after their apartment burned down, then the messiest breakup of the series with Brittany. Now he has done what no other son here has managed — picked his partner in public, with his mother beside him, smiling. Matt, Kelly and Devon even did a podcast together. The leash is off, and Mom is cheering.
No. 2 — Roberto Hernandez: The Walkout
No son ever picked a side more cleanly. Nancy convinced Roberto to demand a paternity test on his own daughter Kimi. It came back 99.99 percent his — and changed nothing, with Nancy reportedly asking why it could not be 100 percent. Kristy asked, “Who is she that I have to prove to her?” and walked out. Roberto followed his wife out the door. According to reports, they distanced themselves from Nancy and are still together. One walkout, straight to second place.
Nos. 3–4 — Jason and Mike: Still Negotiating
Jason and Justina are engaged, parents to a baby girl, still together through Annette’s wedding-planning takeover. Mike and Stephanie are still together too, with Liz still very much part of the picture. Both men kept the relationship and the mother. But the negotiation never ends: every wedding plan still runs through Mom first. Freedom with an asterisk.
No. 5 — Josh: Twelve Years Married, Still With Tina
Josh has never lived apart from his mother Tina, not even after 12 years of marriage to Janelle. The closest thing to a boundary here is Janelle buying a house without a room for Tina. Married and stable — and still sharing his daily life with his mother. Twelve years in, the cord is not cut. It is just neatly coiled.
No. 6 — Austin: Caught Between Mom and Kristopher
Shirlene thinks Austin’s ex Kristopher is toxic and contemplated moving back to Los Angeles, forcing Austin to choose between his mother and his second-chance love. The choice is still open, which is why he sits here, not higher. He has not picked a side yet.

Tre and Abbey are the confirmed split. Lorenda lived directly behind the couple and walked into their home as if it were still hers, until nothing was left to defend. Tre did not lose his freedom in one big fight. He lost it in a hundred small walk-ins.
Nos. 8–9 — Shekeb and Shahid: Still Asking Permission
For three seasons, Shekeb fought for Emily while Laila shut down every move-out talk with “Momma gonna die.” Emily asked for a $40,000 ring and got a $500 promise ring instead, with Laila hidden in the bushes to watch. Emily threw it away. By the Season 3 finale, Shekeb had moved back in with his mom, and according to reports they have since split for good. Shahid sits below him: still shopping for Nylah’s ring on a $25 budget from Dia, while Dia predicts Nylah will disappear. One moved back in with Mom. The other never left her wallet.
