“Momma gonna die.” Laila Sekander said it every time her son Shekeb raised the idea of moving out with his girlfriend Emily Chu — and after three seasons of I Love a Mama’s Boy, the words worked. Emily is gone. Shekeb is 37 and unmarried. And Laila still has her son all to herself. This is everything we know about the longest war in the show’s history, from Kabul to a picnic blanket where a $500 ring ended it all.
Before the Cameras: Kabul, California, and a Bond Built on Survival
Shekeb Sekander was born on August 15, 1989, in Kabul, Afghanistan. His family immigrated to the United States when he was a young boy, and he grew up in Los Angeles, where he still lives. His mother Laila is an Afghan immigrant with a fiery temper and traditional values — and a cancer survivor, a fact her defenders always cite. Shekeb says her devotion comes from what the family survived together.
Emily Chu met Shekeb about two years before Season 1 premiered in 2020. But Laila never got past the religious and cultural differences between Emily and her family, which TLC’s own series announcement says she simply could not get over. The verdict was delivered at hello.
Season 1 (2020): The Spoon, the Faint, and the Insult at the Birthday Party

Season 1 made Laila and Shekeb instant breakout stars, and the opening image told viewers everything: Laila spoon-feeding breakfast to her grown son on the couch while Shekeb opened his mouth like a toddler. It was played for laughs. Emily was not laughing. The humiliations stacked up fast: fainting spells on cue, the word “pig” thrown at Emily at her own birthday party, and — per recaps — a faked knee injury on Valentine’s Day to pull Shekeb away from dinner with Emily. The message never changed: this woman is not joining this family.
Seasons 2–3: Yussra, the $500 Test, and the Coffee in the Face

The war peaked in Seasons 2 and 3. When Emily invited Laila to dinner, Laila showed up with Yussra — the woman she openly wanted Shekeb to marry instead — who then questioned Emily’s cooking at her own table. Then came the number that defined the whole triangle: Emily named her price for commitment, a $40,000 engagement ring. Shekeb asked his mother what to do. Laila had a better idea: test Emily with a $500 promise ring instead. Shekeb agreed, bought the ring, and hid his mother in the bushes to watch. Emily saw through it in seconds, threw the ring away, and destroyed the picnic — while Laila, per recaps, later wore that same $500 ring herself. The real proposal never came.
The end arrived in Laila’s living room. Shekeb finally sat both women down to share his plan to move out with Emily. Laila refused to even hear it and kicked Emily out. Emily, pushed past her limit, threw coffee in Shekeb’s face. By the Season 3 finale, Shekeb had moved back in with his mom. According to reports, he and Emily have since split for good.

Two years after the Season 4 finale, the scoreboard is final: recent interviews confirm the split, and TLC is still silent on Season 5, according to reports. Emily has leaned into an influencer life of fitness and fashion and looks visibly happier, per fan consensus. Shekeb, according to reports, is focused on acting and recruiting — and still extremely close with Laila. As for Yussra, the woman Laila pushed so hard: there is no evidence she and Shekeb are together. Laila fought three seasons to replace Emily — and ended up with neither a daughter-in-law nor, so far, grandchildren. Laila kept her son. The price was everything else.
So: if Laila could rewind to that picnic blanket, would she still hide in the bushes — or finally let her son propose for real? And if the next woman walks into Shekeb’s life tomorrow, does Mom still get a vote? Pick your side: Team Laila Won, or Team Emily Escaped.
