Two singletons. Then nothing but multiples. Deon and Karen Derrico did not just have a big family. They had twins, then quintuplets, then twins again, then triplets, fourteen children in all, and fans have spent years asking the same question: how?
The Derricos have always answered it the same way. Karen has said she never used IVF. But that answer only makes the mystery bigger, because natural quintuplets are extraordinarily rare. So fans went digging into the family tree, and what they found on both sides of it is almost as wild as the family itself.
It Started With Two Singletons

Before the multiples came, the Derricos looked like any young family. Darian, born in 2005, was an only child for five years. Then came Derrick, their son, another singleton. Two kids, two ordinary pregnancies, and no hint of what was coming next.
Karen has also spoken openly about heartbreak in those early years, including miscarriages after Darian was born. It was not a family chasing a record.
Karens Side of the Family Tree
Start with Karen’s side. According to a Today story reported by Screen Rant, Karen has four sets of twins on her maternal side, and an uncle with two sets of triplets on her father’s side.
That matters because the tendency to release more than one egg at a time, which can lead to fraternal multiples, is known to run in families on the mother’s side. No family tree guarantees quintuplets, but it is the first place fans point.

Deon’s side is just as loaded. His mother, Marian, known to fans as GG, miscarried triplets shortly before Deon was born. One generation further back, Deon’s grandmother had a brother with eleven children, including two sets of twins.
Put the two trees together and the picture changes. Both parents came from families where multiples were a recurring fact of life. The Derricos were, in a sense, the two family trees colliding.
No IVF and One Progesterone Pregnancy

Here is the detail that always sparks the debate. Karen did not use fertility drugs, according to Screen Rant’s report of the Today story. When she became pregnant with Derrick, she was put on progesterone to sustain the pregnancy, not a treatment that creates multiples.
And then, after the two singletons, every pregnancy that followed was multiples. Twins Dallas and Denver. Quintuplets Deniko, Dariz, Deonee, Daician and Daiten. Diez and Dior, lovingly called the triplins, because they were born as triplets and their brother Carter died shortly after birth, a loss the family still honors. Finally, triplets Dawsyn, De’Aren and Dyver, born prematurely before growing into healthy kids.
That sequence is why the mystery refuses to die. Genetics is complicated and no single gene explains quintuplets, yet the family tree explains plenty. Both can be true at once.
The Question Fans Still Ask
Today the Derricos are in a very different chapter. Deon and Karen divorced in June 2024 after nineteen years, and Deon has said, according to reports, that the family is filming again with a new season targeted for 2027, though no network, title or date has been confirmed.
Some fans land firmly on science: two family trees full of twins and triplets and a run of luck nobody could have predicted. Others land on faith: a family that prayed for a big family and got exactly that, four times over. Was it pure genetics, or something no chart can explain? Team Genetics or Team Blessing, pick a side, because after fourteen kids, nobody gets to sit this one out.
