Rosie O’Donnell has not watched Sister Wives in a decade. She put on season 21 this week — and her first reaction was the same one half the fandom has been posting since September. According to PEOPLE, the comedian shared an Instagram post on Monday, November 2, celebrating the one absence shaping the whole season: Kody Brown is gone. “So I just put on season 21 of Sister Wives — after not watching for a decade — and found out happily Kody is not on it anymore,” she wrote. “It’s actually interesting to see these women after him — fascinating in many ways.”
The Post That Stopped the Scroll
Rosie posted the message over a photo of the three women now carrying the show: Janelle Brown, Meri Brown and Christine Brown Woolley. The word doing all the work in her caption is “happily.” She did not hedge, did not add a sad-face emoji for the end of a 16-year run, did not pretend this was bittersweet. She was happy he was gone — and she said so in public, to millions of followers, on the same day Janelle was telling PEOPLE she learned about Kody and Robyn’s exit through an email.
That bluntness is exactly why the post exploded. Rosie is not a Sister Wives podcaster or a stan account. She is a mainstream celebrity with her own history with the family, and she just said the quiet part out loud: the show got interesting again the moment its leading man left.
A Decade Away — and a 2011 Connection
Rosie is not a stranger to the Browns. PEOPLE notes she previously interviewed some of the show’s cast on The Rosie Show back in 2011, when the series was still introducing America to plural marriage. She watched the family when Kody had four wives and a hit premise. She checked out somewhere along the way — a decade away, by her own count — and returned to find the premise itself had changed. Sister Wives debuted on September 26, 2010, following Kody and his polygamous lifestyle with Janelle, Meri, Christine and Robyn Brown. Since then, Kody has split from Janelle, Meri and Christine, leaving Robyn as his only remaining wife.
So Rosie’s reaction is really a review from the toughest kind of viewer: a lapsed one. She did not come back for nostalgia. She came back, saw three ex-wives rebuilding their lives on camera, and stayed because — in her word — it was “fascinating.”
What Season 21 Looks Like Without Him

When the first trailer for the new season dropped in September, TLC made the break official: “After 16 years of filming Sister Wives, Kody & Robyn will not be returning to the show.” The wives’ own reactions in that trailer said everything about the shock of it. Christine said, “I don’t know what it means. I have no idea.” Janelle said she was “flabbergasted.” Meri said she “was actually surprised.”

Season 21 follows Janelle, Meri and Christine as they move on from their plural marriage, heal their wounds and explore new romances, according to PEOPLE. Christine married her husband, David Woolley, in October 2023. Janelle introduced fans to her boyfriend Pete in August via Instagram. Meri is dabbling in the dating scene while hunting for a new home. No shared husband, no sister-wife meetings, no storyline bending back toward Kody’s rules and reactions. Just three women, three separate lives, and the slow work of rebuilding.
Janelle’s Email: “The End of an Era”

The same day Rosie posted, Janelle told PEOPLE she had not talked to Kody and Robyn since the family sold their property in season 20 — and that she found out they were not returning through email. “I haven’t talked to them since, well, since we were all together after we sold the property [in season 20], and I don’t know anything about what’s going on in their lives,” she said. “And so yeah, I’m like, ‘Okay, I guess this is what we’re doing now.'”
Then came the line that sounds like an answer to Rosie. “It felt like the end of an era, but also too, I feel like going forward now, there’s so many beautiful things happening for all of us,” Janelle said. “And I think it’s nice that we can focus on that and not so much all the conversations that were happening because of things that Kody would say.” Read that twice: the show’s own star is relieved the conversation is no longer about what Kody would say. Rosie just said the same thing from the couch.
So, Fans — Team “Better Without Him” or Team “Bring Back the Chaos”?
Here is where the fandom splits, and there is no polite middle ground. Team “Better Without Him” says Rosie is right and the proof is on screen: the women are funnier, freer and more honest when no scene has to end with Kody’s verdict. Christine laughing with David, Janelle asking whether a kind man remembering what she said is “normal,” Meri house-hunting on her own terms — none of that needed Kody, and all of it was impossible while every storyline orbited him.
Team “Bring Back the Chaos” says be careful what you celebrate. Kody was the engine of the show for 16 years — the arguments, the favoritism fights, the confessionals fans loved to hate. Without him, the show risks becoming three pleasant lifestyle diaries with no villain, no stakes and no reason to tune in live. Even Rosie admitted she had not watched in a decade. If the show needed Kody to leave to win her back, what happens when the novelty of his absence wears off?
So pick your side and defend it. Is Sister Wives genuinely better without Kody — or is the Kody-free glow just the honeymoon phase before fans start missing the mess? New episodes air Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC, and the comments are yours.
