“Your bed’s not here. You have to leave.” That was Christine Brown Woolley to Kody Brown, on the stairs of a house that used to be theirs. On Sunday night, in season 21, episode 6, “Therapy by Fire,” Christine carried that bluntness to a campsite with Janelle Brown, and the two ex-wives finally talked out loud about what polygamy cost them.
The episode opened as this season keeps opening: the three ex-wives together, Kody and Robyn gone. Season 21 premiered on October 4 without them, after a September trailer said they would not return after 16 years. Last night gave them a fire, a photo album and a campsite to test whether they can be friends.
The Photos Come Out First
Before the fire, there were the photos. Christine, Janelle and Meri got together for the first time in years to share pictures, per TV listings, and revisit their history without Kody narrating it. A far cry from the frosty standoffs of earlier seasons, when every conversation had a husband in the middle of it.
The Fire, and What Went Into It
Then came the fire: Meri, Janelle and Christine burning jewelry from their marriages, a farewell to life with Kody. The rings going into the fire had already split fans before it aired: a clean break to some, a keepsake destroyed. Watching it, the argument looked smaller than the moment. Nobody was performing; they looked like three women finishing a chore years overdue, while Meri slipped away to San Francisco.
Around the Campfire, Polygamy Gets an Honest Hearing

The heart came later, when Christine and Janelle went camping and talked frankly about polygamy. It delivered what sixteen years of family meetings never did: two women who lived it for decades, outside it at last, saying what it did to them. These reflective talks are the season’s backbone now, and they land harder than any confrontation. No more negotiating with Kody. They are comparing notes, and the notes match.
Your Bed Is Not Here
Christine carried into camp a story she told Meri on the November 1 episode: Kody had said he was not attracted to her and was not interested in the marriage, then came over and started up the stairs to bed. “What are you doing?” she asked him. “Well, I’m gonna go to bed,” he said. “Your bed’s not here. You have to leave,” she told him. When he asked where his bedroom was, she said, “I don’t know. It’s not here. That’s my bedroom. The only person allowed in there is me, ’cause I actually wanna be with me.”

Christine said she knew her marriage was over when Kody refused to attend their daughter Ysabel’s back surgery. Ysabel was diagnosed with scoliosis in 2017 and had a 12-hour spinal fusion in 2020. Kody told her, in front of Ysabel, “I can’t leave my family that long.” Ysabel answered, “I thought we were family.” Christine called it the biggest thing.
Janelle’s Quiet Answer

Janelle’s version was quieter. She split from Kody in December 2022, after nearly 30 years and six children, and has called staying “a burden” since. Then: she found out by email that Kody and Robyn were quitting the show, and has not spoken to them since the Coyote Pass sale. No call, no sit-down, not even a text, after nearly three decades.
Six episodes in, Season 21 has proved the show did not collapse without its leading man. Christine drew her line at a bedroom door; Janelle drew hers at an ending never told to her face. So who walked away first: the woman who said “your bed’s not here,” or the woman who stopped waiting for a phone call that never came?
