After nearly 30 years of marriage and 16 years on television together, Janelle Brown found out that Kody and Robyn Brown were leaving Sister Wives the same way most of us get a shipping update: by email.
In a new interview with PEOPLE, published November 2, Janelle revealed she did not get a phone call, a sit-down, or even a text from her ex-husband. She got a message. Her reaction, in her own words, was: “I actually got an email that they weren’t coming back, and I’m like, ‘Oh, wow. Okay.’”
Asked whether she deleted that email, Janelle did not hesitate. “I might have. I didn’t care.”
It is the coldest, calmest line of Season 21 so far — and fans are split over whether it is the ultimate power move or the saddest proof of how far this family has fallen.
An Email, Not a Phone Call
Janelle, 57, told PEOPLE she has not spoken to Kody, 57, and Robyn, 48, since the family gathered after selling their Coyote Pass property in Season 20. “I don’t know anything about what’s going on in their lives,” she said. She did not reach out after the news, though she said she hopes they are doing well.
Season 21 is the first season without Kody and Robyn, and the episodes now center on his ex-wives: Janelle, Christine and Meri Brown. On camera in the premiere, the shock was real — Janelle said she was “flabbergasted,” Christine called it “bizarre,” and Meri said she was “actually surprised.”

Janelle said her six children — Logan, Madison, Hunter, Garrison, Gabriel and Savanah — were surprised when she told them. Then came the line that stopped fans mid-scroll: “But again, most of my children don’t really have a relationship with their father, so it was kind of just news really.”
For viewers, this is the biggest shake-up in the show’s history. For Janelle’s kids, according to their mother, it barely registered — the distance was already there long before the email arrived.
“90 to 95 Percent”: The Number Fans Cannot Stop Quoting
In the same round of interviews, Janelle estimated that Kody is “alienated from 90 to 95 percent” of his children. That is her assessment, not a verified count — Kody has 18 children in total — but the number has taken on a life of its own. Supporters say she is naming what the cameras have shown for years; critics say a percentage like that closes doors a quieter conversation might have kept open.
The Apology Tour She Does Not Buy
At the end of Season 20, Kody said he planned a “pilgrimage” to apologize to Janelle, Christine and Meri, and the Season 21 premiere showed those apologies. Janelle is not convinced: “I feel like the apology tour was, in the end, something he was trying to redeem himself with, and I don’t think it was necessarily that sincere because there’s been no contact since.”
End of an Era — or the Start of the Good Part?

Janelle herself called the news “the end of an era,” then pivoted to the part fans keep quoting: “I feel like going forward now, there’s so many beautiful things happening for all of us. And I think it’s nice that we can focus on that and not so much all the conversations that were happening because of things that Kody would say.”
So here is the question splitting the fandom: was learning about the exit by email the final disrespect in a marriage that ended years ago — or is Janelle’s “I didn’t care” the healthiest, most honest response she could have given? Team Email Was the Last Straw, or Team Unbothered Is the Win? And be honest: would you have deleted the email, too?
