In December, Whitney Way Thore posted seven words that rearranged her show: she was “moving to a new place” again. Six months later, a fan asked where her June 1 photo dump had been taken. Whitney answered with a single word: “Charlotte.”
That one-word answer ends a road that started twelve years earlier, in front of a laptop camera. Follow the moves — Greensboro to Salem to Charlotte — and you follow the whole story of the show.
A Radio Producer, a Laptop Camera, and a Dance Video
In early 2014, Whitney was not a television star. She was an on-air producer on Jared & Katie in the Morning at Greensboro station 107.5 KZL, a former dancer sidelined by a polycystic ovary syndrome diagnosis. On February 27, 2014, the station posted “A Fat Girl Dancing,” Whitney dancing with her friend Todd Beasley. Shot on a laptop camera, it passed eight million views and carried her onto the Today Show and Good Morning America. On January 13, 2015, the show premiered on TLC — and Greensboro became its first home.
The Classes That Turned a Video Into a Movement

Whitney did not let the viral moment stay a moment. She built the No Body Shame campaign — “Love yourself. Live fully. No excuses. No shame.” — and taught Big Girl Dance Classes for women told studios were not for them. The thread held to the Season 13 premiere, when she finally taught at London’s famed Pineapple Dance Studios, a dream a decade in the making. Dance was never just a storyline. It was the engine.
The Kitchen Table That Held the Show Together
For a decade, though, the show’s center of gravity was not a studio. It was a kitchen table in Greensboro, where her parents, Barbara “Babs” Thore and Glenn Thore, became television family to millions — Babs with her quick wit, Glenn with his binders and dry humor. Babs died at home in Greensboro on December 7, 2022, and Season 14 will be the fourth season without her. Glenn remains the anchor, but the house that held the show together is gone.
Salem Was the Dress Rehearsal for Leaving
That is what makes Salem so important. In Season 13, Whitney admitted she was in a rut in Greensboro after ten years of filming there, and signed a lease in April 2025 on a furnished two-bedroom cottage duplex in Salem, Massachusetts, shared with her dog Goosie. She told Realtor.com the waterfront house felt “bright and light” and that she felt “at peace” there — but the real gift was anonymity: fans had been walking up to her Greensboro house, even into the backyard. In Salem, she felt like “the new person in town.” Salem was a pause, not a home. It proved leaving could feel good.

Charlotte closes the circle. Whitney lived there before and once said she felt safe there because nobody could Google her address. According to TLC, she first met Jake Beaudoin years ago and reconnected with him after returning to Charlotte; she went Instagram official with him in late May 2026 and announced their engagement to People on August 18, 2026. The trailer has her calling life “brand new” since moving back — and restating “I still want a baby. That’s my main objective.” TLC’s tagline says it all: “New city, new lover, new era.” Season 14 premieres Tuesday, November 10 at 10pm ET/PT, with Whitney building a relationship, a dance life, and a future on camera without the Greensboro safety net.
Greensboro made Whitney famous. Salem taught her she could leave. Charlotte is where she chose to rebuild. So when Season 14 opens November 10: which city holds the real Whitney — the one that launched her, or the one she came back to?
