Whitney Way Thore made her fiancé rent a storage unit. Not because she does not love Jake Beaudoin — she is marrying the man — but because in her 830-square-foot Charlotte apartment, every object has to earn its place. If it does not spark joy, it stays outside. If it does, it might end up beside nine Henri Matisse prints and her handmade basketball net.
The tour comes from the Season 14 premiere of My Big Fat Fabulous Life, arriving November 10 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on TLC. In a clip shared with Realtor.com, Whitney walks her friend Ashley Baynes through the flat she has rented since December 2025, after a stay in Salem. She calls it her “dopamine apartment” — and thirty seconds in, you get it.
830 Square Feet, One Rainbow, Zero Apologies
This is not a neutral apartment. Whitney filled it with color, texture, and tchotchkes: locker cabinets, round coffee tables, wavy lamps and candlesticks — shapes she would never have picked for Greensboro, where the family home always had to feel grown-up. Here, the rule is simpler: if something is the cutest thing she has ever seen, she buys it, whether it fits or not.
Whitney says she is obsessed with Henri Matisse — nine of his prints hang in the flat — and the space pushed her back into making art after twenty years. The piece she is proudest of is not a purchase: a handmade basketball net, made after she fell for the Charlotte Hornets. Her late mother is there too: a portrait of Barbara “Babs” Thore, and her notes on the fridge.

The View That Sold Her — And the Corner That Heals Her
The flat is small, but the view does the heavy lifting. Whitney says the uptown Charlotte skyline was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen at first sight — and it is why she picked this unit. Her favorite spot is a nook with a cognac armchair and a bright blue rug, where she reads at night under the skyline, the moon, and Venus. It is her sanctuary, and with no 9-to-5 she is home most of the time.
The systems matter as much as the colors. Whitney says her physical space mirrors her mental space, so clutter is not an option. With ADHD, she needs routines set up exactly her way — so her handyman Pavel spent hours measuring and moving things until every shelf sat right.

Jake Moved In — And His Stuff Moved Out
Then there is the fiancé. According to reports, Jake welcomed the apartment’s playful style — but Whitney admits that living with a man in her rainbow flat has been difficult. She does not love his stuff, and the compromise was a storage unit for his things. Her rule, teased: no evidence that he lives there. They plan to move somewhere bigger eventually.
It is a full house already, even at 830 square feet. Whitney shares the flat with her dog Goosie and her cat Wandaleezza Rice, and Jake moved in after she arrived. It is no showpiece. Walking through the door lifts her mood instantly, she says — and she calls it her favorite place she has ever lived, “by miles.”
Why Charlotte, Why Now
The move was a reset. Whitney left Salem to help her dad at home, and came back to North Carolina — but not to Greensboro. Charlotte offered what Greensboro never did: a city outside her window. In Greensboro she felt isolated; in Charlotte, she says, she feels part of the world.
If it sparks joy, it stays; if it is Jake’s stuff, it goes to storage. Which corner of Whitney’s rainbow flat would you steal — the Matisse wall, the cognac armchair, or the handmade basketball net?
