Trent & Amber’s Toughest Parenting Calls: 5 Times Fans Had to Pick a Side

Seventeen seasons in, 7 Little Johnstons fans can agree on one thing: Trent and Amber Johnston never parent halfway. Every rule comes with a reason, every lecture comes with a camera rolling, and every big decision splits the fandom straight down the middle. With Season 18 premiering Tuesday, November 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TLC, it is the perfect time to settle the debate once and for all — or at least argue about it properly.

These are the five toughest parenting calls Trent and Amber have ever made on camera, and the two sides fans still cannot agree on. Pick your side as you read. The comments are about to get loud.

1. The Anna Boundary: An Open Door With One Condition

No parenting call in this family’s history has divided fans like the estrangement from daughter Anna. According to PEOPLE, Anna departed the series after Season 16 and has been estranged from Trent and Amber since the summer of 2025. As of October 2026, there is no public sign of a reconciliation, and Anna will not appear in Season 18, according to reports.

Trent has stated the parents’ position plainly on camera: “When Anna alone wants to sit down with her mom and dad and start building this fence together, we’ll do it.” Team Parents hears a door left open — patient, dignified, and fair after years of public family tension. Team Anna hears a condition dressed up as an invitation, and wonders why the burden of the first step falls entirely on the child.

This is the call that makes every other debate on this list look easy. There is no middle ground here, only two grieving sides of the same family.

2. The Dinner-Table Rule: Everybody Answers for Themselves

Ask any longtime viewer to describe the Johnston house and they will mention the dinner table: a place where everybody answered for themselves, where chores were not optional, and where curfews and routines were enforced in front of the cameras. Trent and Amber built the show on structure — bedtimes, chores, and very public lectures when a kid stepped out of line.

Team Structure says that is exactly why five kids raised on reality TV turned into functioning adults: the rules were the love language. Team Too Strict says the cameras made discipline performative, and that a lecture lands differently when millions of people are watching. Either way, the dinner-table rule is the foundation every later argument in this family is built on.

3. Jonah’s Story: Protection or Overprotection?

According to the show, baby Jonah spent six weeks in the NICU and nearly died from premature lung development. Fans say that revelation reframes years of Trent and Amber’s strict parenting of their eldest son — the protectiveness, the worry, the hands-on involvement in his adult life.

Team Protection argues that once you know where Jonah started, every overbearing moment reads as a parent who almost lost a child and never forgot it. Team Let Go counters that Jonah is now an adult, and that a NICU story from decades ago cannot justify unlimited parental input into a grown man’s relationships. It is the most emotional argument on this list, because both sides are really arguing about the same thing: how long a parent’s fear gets to set the rules.

4. Grown Kids Under Their Roof: Where Help Ends and Control Begins

Liz Johnston and Brice Bolden, together since 2019, married in an intimate outdoor ceremony at the Johnston family home on November 8, 2025. Their daughter Leighton was born in November 2023, and on September 8, 2026, they welcomed their second child, Coleman Brice Bolden Jr. Trent and Amber have been front and center for every milestone — weddings, births, birthdays — and fans cannot decide whether that is the sweetest part of the show or a line crossed.

Team Best Grandparents says presence is the point: Lolli and Boppa show up, and a family that close is a gift. Team Too Involved asks when a married couple with two kids gets to be the main characters of their own household. Season 18, which follows Liz’s second pregnancy on screen even though Coleman is already here in real life, will only sharpen the question.

5. The Dating Rules: Emma at 21 and the “Still Single” Moment

Emma Johnston turns 21 this season, and the Season 18 trailer gave fans their flashpoint: when a friend asks if she wants a boyfriend, her answer is a simple, relatable “Yes.” For years, viewers watched Trent and Amber police the dating lives of their adult children — curfews, questions, and very public opinions about boyfriends.

Team Let Her Live says Emma has earned the right to date on her own terms at 21, cameras or no cameras. Team Still Mom and Dad says the Johnston parents are not policing romance — they are doing what they have always done, asking hard questions before a stranger joins the family. Emma’s own voice may settle it: she has built her own following as a TikTok creator and is not shy about talking back when fans speculate about her love life.

The Verdict Is Yours

Here is the uncomfortable truth about Trent and Amber: the same call can be great parenting and too much parenting at the same time, depending on which chair at the dinner table you are sitting in. That is why this family has lasted seventeen seasons — the arguments are not about villains and heroes, but about where love ends and control begins.

So pick a side, and defend it: Team Parents or Team Kids? Which of these five calls did Trent and Amber get right, and which one would you have handled differently? Drop your verdict in the comments — and tell us which call Season 18 should finally resolve when it premieres November 17.
