Fans Keep Getting Shauna Rae’s Independence Wrong — 5 Myths, Debunked by Her Own Words

Ask any I Am Shauna Rae fan how independent Shauna really is, and you will start an argument. The problem: Shauna has already answered most of these questions herself. Fans just keep ignoring the answers. So let us settle it, myth by myth, using only what she actually said and did.

Myth #1: She Still Lives With Her Parents, So She Is Not Independent

Shauna knocked this one down herself in January 2025 on the Unplanned Podcast with Matt and Abby Howard. Asked if she still lived alone, she answered: “No, I live with my boyfriend.” It is “technically alone,” she said — away from her parents — after eight years of family noise.

Living at home never meant being looked after, she argued. “I was already very independent in that house,” she said, noting she did her parents’ dishes and cooked for her sister Rylee after work. Independence, in her telling, was never about an address. It was about who did the work. And the Brooklyn stay in the Season 2 finale was a TV trial run, not that move.

Myth #2: She Can’t Drive, So She Can’t Go Anywhere Alone

Anyone who watched Season 2 knows this is simply false. In “Shauna Takes the Wheel,” Shauna took her driving test using hand controls — and passed. At 3-foot-10 after childhood brain cancer treatment damaged her pituitary gland, she does not drive like most people. She drives anyway. That is freedom in its most practical form: no asking for lifts, no waiting on someone else’s schedule.

Myth #3: She Does Not Work — TLC Pays for Everything

Shauna worked on camera long before anyone debated her paycheck. In Season 1 she interviewed for a job working with animals and clocked in for her first day — ordinary adult stuff. After the cameras stopped, she built a different living: 1M+ TikTok followers (@shaunarae99), Cameo videos, and childhood-cancer advocacy.

To be fair, she has never announced a traditional full-time employer, and this article will not invent one. But “no announced day job” is not “does not work.”

Myth #4: Her Boyfriend Is Dan — Or She’s Single

Both versions are wrong. Dan Swygart, the Season 2 connection, was casual and never progressed past friendship, according to reports. The real relationship is the one she refuses to display: a boyfriend she has been with since around 2022, according to reports, whose face she keeps off the internet on purpose. Her reason is practical: “I more worry because he has a nice job. I don’t want anything bad going to the job.” Her rule is absolute — his face stays hidden “unless I’m marrying him.” She has also spoken about surviving an abusive relationship at 18 and about suitors who studied her “like I’m a specimen in a lab.” For Shauna, privacy is protection. And no, an engagement has not been confirmed.

Myth #5: TLC Canceled Her, So She Disappeared

The dull truth: TLC has never officially canceled I Am Shauna Rae, and it has never announced a Season 3 either. The show ran for two seasons, its final episode airing on October 1, 2023, and then it simply stopped. That is silence, not cancellation — and Shauna filled it herself, including TikTok clapbacks when strangers reported her account as underage. The woman fans call “disappeared” has talked to a million-plus people all along.

So where do you land? Team “She Proved It”: she drives, earns, lives away from her parents, and sets harder boundaries than most reality stars. Or Team “Still Not Convinced”? Which myth did you believe until today — and which one are you still not buying? Sound off in the comments.
