“Kimberly don’t look nothing like my son.” Nancy Hernandez said it at the dinner table, in front of her son Roberto, his brother, and the cameras — days before Season 3 of I Love a Mama’s Boy even premiered. Her granddaughter Kimberly was still a toddler, and the accusation was that Kristy, Roberto’s wife, had cheated. Nancy already had a solution ready: a paternity test.
It is the ugliest demand in the show’s history — and it produced the cleanest exit any son here has ever made. The dinner, the test, the number, and the door: here is the story.
June 2022: “One Looks Like Him. The Other Is Questionable”

Season 3 premiered on June 19, 2022, and the first clip told viewers everything about the new family. Roberto Hernandez — a farmer and an MMA fighter — sat eating with his mother Nancy and his brother, talking proudly about his two kids, his motivation. That was when Nancy made a face and noted that one child looks just like him, but the other is questionable.
Roberto was visibly taken aback. Both of his kids look exactly like him, he told her. Nancy had never cared for Kristy — the woman Roberto met at a gym, married, and eloped with — and now she had a theory about the little girl. The subject of a DNA test came up, and it blew Roberto away. Worse, Nancy pulled this right before one of his fights. The test was not a question. It was a verdict looking for paperwork.
The Test Comes Back 99.99% — and Nancy Moves the Goalposts
On July 23, 2022, Kristy and Roberto took the paternity test. The result: Kimberly is 99.99% Roberto’s child. Kristy went to Nancy’s house to confront her with the paper in hand. Nancy scolded Roberto for bringing his daughter-in-law into her home. “You could’ve came by yourself,” she quipped.
Then came the line that turned a science result into a family war. “But why couldn’t it be 100%?” Nancy asked. She called the results “fake,” accused Kristy of altering them, and demanded a retest in front of her. Kristy called the bluff for what it was: “She didn’t want Kimberly to be Robert’s.” No number would have satisfied Nancy, because the number was never the point.

The confrontation at Nancy’s house ended the way confrontations with Nancy always end — with Kristy walking out. She delivered the coldest line TLC has ever aired: “Who is she that I have to prove to her?” Then she went through the door.
The legend-making moment is what happened next. Roberto followed his wife out the door instead of staying to defend his mother. Fans applauded him for standing up to his mother for his wife. His brother Jacob and aunt Peggy barely greeted Kristy when the couple arrived. “I can’t believe Robert brought Kristy,” Peggy told producers. Nancy admitted on camera she is “a very jealous mother” who “never approved” of Kristy. It was never about the DNA.
The Walkout That Actually Stuck
Roberto and Kristy stormed out of Nancy’s home over what Kristy called her “toxic” behavior, and according to reports, they later distanced themselves from Nancy and are still together. On Valentine’s Day, Roberto posted an Instagram video of his wife celebrating eight years together: eight years that survived a mother who tried to end the marriage with a cotton swab.
Two years after the Season 4 finale aired on November 18, 2024, TLC is still silent on Season 5, according to reports. But this timeline does not need a new season. Most sons here spend four seasons negotiating with their mothers; Roberto picked a side in a single doorway — and never un-picked it.
So here is the question Nancy never answered: if 99.99% was not enough, what number would have been — 100%, or a different daughter-in-law? If you were Roberto, would you have followed Kristy out that door, or stayed to make your mother say the number out loud?
