An Email Ended 30 Years — Fans Split Over How Janelle Learned Kody Was Done

Thirty years of marriage, six children, sixteen years on television — and the news arrived like a delivery update. In a PEOPLE exclusive published on November 2, Janelle Brown revealed she learned Kody Brown and Robyn Brown were leaving Sister Wives by email. Not a phone call. Not a family meeting. An email.

“I actually got an email that they weren’t coming back, and I’m like, ‘Oh, wow. Okay,’” Janelle told PEOPLE. She has not talked to Kody and Robyn since the family was last together after selling the property in season 20, and her children were surprised. The email itself? “I might have [deleted it]. I didn’t care.”

The Email That Ended an Era

Janelle joined Kody’s plural family in a spiritual ceremony in January 1993, becoming his second wife. Together they raised Logan, Madison, Hunter, Gabriel, Savanah and their late son Garrison, and their relationship dissolved in 2022, along with Kody’s marriages to Meri and Christine. Three decades of history — reduced to an inbox notification.

On the season 21 premiere, Janelle said she was “very shocked” and “flabbergasted,” and PEOPLE reports that Christine and Meri were equally surprised. TLC had confirmed the exit in the season 21 trailer on September 14: after 16 years of filming, Kody and Robyn would not be returning. Janelle said the premiere had to explain the empty chairs to longtime viewers. “I think we’re sort of done with that era,” she said.

Team “Disrespectful After 30 Years”

For one side of the fandom, the email is the whole story — and it is damning. Thirty years, the argument goes, earns at least a conversation. Janelle was the mother of his children and a partner through most of his adult life. To learn about the end of the show that defined their family through a message, with no call before or after, feels like final proof of a pattern fans watched for years: Kody pulling away, then making it official without facing it.

This side also points to the silence since. Janelle only knows Kody and Robyn now, in her words, “through what I hear from people.” For these fans, that silence is the real ending — the email was just the paperwork.

Team “Classic Kody — At Least He Didn’t Go Silent”

The other side shrugs right along with Janelle. What did anyone expect, they ask — a tearful farewell tour? By the time the email arrived, the relationships were already over: Janelle, Christine and Meri had all left. An email, in this reading, is not a betrayal. It is honesty without theatre — and at least the news came directly, rather than Janelle learning it from a trailer like everyone else.

Janelle’s own reaction backs this camp up, they argue. She described surprise, then acceptance: “Okay, I guess this is what we’re doing now.” She hopes Kody and Robyn are doing OK, and called it “the end of an era” while insisting “so many beautiful things” are happening for all of them going forward. If Janelle has moved on, why hold a grudge on her behalf?

What Season 21 Has to Prove Without Them

Whichever side fans land on, the email has already changed the show. Season 21, airing Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC, follows Janelle, Meri and Christine building lives after plural marriage — new homes, new romances, a friendship no longer running through Kody. The premiere explained his absence. The rest must prove the show can thrive without him.

So, Sister Wives fans, pick your side. Was an email after 30 years disrespectful — or the most honest ending this family was ever going to get? Team “He Owed Her a Call” or Team “Email Was Enough”? Tell us in the comments, and bring your receipts.
