Kody’s Gone From Sister Wives — But His ‘Backdoor Deal’ Claim Is Still Splitting Meri and Janelle

Kody Brown is no longer filming Sister Wives. He and Robyn walked away ahead of Season 21 after 16 years on camera. But his exit did not end the drama — one accusation he left behind is still driving a wedge between two of his ex-wives.

The claim: that Janelle Brown tried to cut Meri Brown out of the sale of Coyote Pass, the family’s shared Arizona land. Janelle says it never happened. Meri says she still does not know what to believe.

The Accusation That Won’t Die

In the Season 21 premiere (October 4), Janelle addressed Kody’s claim head-on: that she wanted a “backdoor deal” leaving Meri out of the Coyote Pass sale.

Janelle flatly denied it. “It was not true,” she said, adding: “Trust me, if I had been scheming, you would not have known it.” What stung most was the timing — Kody raised it months after the deal had closed, as what she called a “parting gift” on his way out. “This accusation not only felt very personal, like a final F-you as he was leaving,” she said, “but everybody’s believing him.” She also dismissed Kody’s Season 20 “apology tour” as insincere, noting there has been no contact since: “He very publicly torpedoed my character afterwards.”

The $1.5 Million Land Deal Behind the Fight

Coyote Pass was supposed to be the Brown family’s fresh start. Kody and his four then-wives bought the 14-acre Flagstaff property in 2018 for $820,000, planning four houses — one for each wife. Those plans collapsed as the marriages fell apart, and the land sold in April 2025 for $1.5 million, with Kody, Robyn, Janelle, and Meri each reportedly pocketing $375,000.

Getting to that even split was messy. Janelle said Kody threatened to hold money back, telling her he might keep cash “in reserve for Meri” until Meri did what he wanted. Kody himself admitted his lawyer told him he could sell and owe the ex-wives nothing, since his name was on the title. At one point, Janelle and Meri even hired lawyers to protect their shares.

Meri Refuses to Pick a Side

When Janelle sat down with Meri to set the record straight, the conversation did not go the way Janelle hoped. Meri admitted she did not “understand all the details” and believed Janelle and Kody had discussed selling the land without her approval.

Meri was candid about where she stands now. “She and I are not buddies. We do not have complete trust,” she said. Yet she also refused to fully take Kody’s side, noting that Kody and Robyn were “not willing” to discuss it with her, and saying she was not taking a side at all, since everyone tells their own story to look better.

Why Fans Are Still Taking Sides

The Coyote Pass fight has become a loyalty test for the fandom. Team Janelle sees a woman who did the paperwork, pushed the sale forward, and got smeared for it on her ex-husband’s way out. Team Meri sees a woman kept in the dark too many times before, with every right to ask questions before trusting anyone’s version.

And then there is the uncomfortable middle: Meri herself, who will not condemn Janelle but will not fully clear her either. That refusal is exactly what keeps the argument going — because as long as Meri says “I don’t know,” both camps can claim she is on theirs. As Janelle put it: “I just want this thing to be over. I thought it was. Obviously not — it’s the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you, Kody Brown.”

Your turn: do you believe Janelle, who says the backdoor deal never happened — or is Meri right to keep asking questions? Team Janelle or Team Meri?
