Most people mark a 50th birthday with a cake and a quiet dinner. Trent Johnston is marking his by grabbing a lance, heading to a dude ranch, and dragging his whole family along for the ride. As 7 Little Johnstons returns for Season 18 on Tuesday, November 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TLC, the family patriarch has set himself the most Trent challenge imaginable: trying 50 new things at 50.

The List: What TLC Actually Confirmed

According to TLC’s official season announcement, Trent is “embracing a major milestone as he turns 50” with an ambitious bucket list challenge: 50 new experiences in his 50th year. The network teases him “working on a real dude ranch and jousting,” plus adventures far outside his comfort zone. Coverage of the trailer adds more confirmed items: magic tricks, cow chasing, and rock rappelling, according to reports. That is five stunts confirmed so far, with 45 more still under wraps. TLC has not released the full list, so anything beyond those five is fan guesswork, but the pattern is already clear: nothing on this list is small, calm, or indoors.

Ranked: From Wildest to “Trent, Please Stop”

How do the confirmed five stack up? Here is our completely unofficial, extremely debatable ranking, wildest first. At number one: jousting. A man who has never jousted a day in his life, on a horse, with a lance, on national television. Second: cow chasing, because cows do not follow scripts and Trent knows it. Third: rock rappelling, genuinely brave and genuinely high up. Fourth: dude-ranch work, the most wholesome entry, and the one most likely to end with Trent insisting on a new chore at home. Fifth: magic tricks, the safest of the five, unless the trick goes wrong on camera, in which case it instantly jumps to number one.

The Family Reaction: Cheering, Cringing, or Both?

Here is the part that makes the storyline work: Trent is not doing this alone. TLC says he is trying his 50 new things “with his family,” and the trailer shows the Johnstons in cowboy hats, walking the ranch together like a tiny, determined posse. Amber, meanwhile, is navigating a very different season, as TLC says she is exploring ways to manage the challenges of perimenopause while juggling everything else. So while Trent charges off to joust, Amber holds the fort, which is pretty much the Johnston marriage in a nutshell. Expect the kids to split exactly the way fans do: half cheering their dad on, half filming him for evidence.

Why 50 New Things Hits Different at 50

Strip away the jokes and the challenge is actually a lovely statement. Trent’s message, per TLC, is that “it’s never too late to try something new.” Fifty is the age when most people start narrowing their world down. Trent is deliberately blowing his wide open, one slightly ridiculous experience at a time. It is also smart television: a built-in countdown, a new stunt every episode or two, and a guaranteed family reaction shot every single time. Whether he finishes all 50 is almost beside the point. The trying is the show.

Season 18 premieres Tuesday, November 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TLC, streaming on Max. So, Johnston fans, pick your side: which of Trent’s 50-at-50 stunts is the wildest, and which one should he absolutely never repeat? Is jousting the peak of the list, or does cow chasing deserve the crown? And be honest: are you cheering him on, or are you already nervous for him?
