Sister Wives: Meri Finally Admits Why She Stayed — ‘I Got a Little Bit Stubborn’

Meri Brown finally explained why she stayed with Kody Brown long after she knew the marriage was over.

“I will be the thorn in your side or the knife in your kidney, or whatever.”

That is how Meri Brown just explained, on Sister Wives, why she stayed married to Kody Brown long after she knew the marriage was over. Not love. Not hope, exactly. Stubbornness — and a refusal to let Kody walk away looking like the innocent party.

According to OK! Magazine’s report on the latest episode, Meri finally said out loud what fans have debated for years: she knew it was never going to work, and she stayed anyway. On purpose. And now that she has said it, the fandom is split all over again — was staying her smartest power move, or the biggest waste of her life?

“I Wanted Him to Say It”

Meri told former sister wife Christine Brown Woolley that she reached a point where she was “pretty confident that it was never going to work out.” But leaving first would have handed Kody exactly what she believed he wanted: a clean exit with his hands clean.

“And he was waiting for me to say something about it so that he could be the innocent party. And so I got a little bit stubborn and just stuck around,” Meri said, according to OK!.

She wanted Kody to say it himself — to own the end of the marriage out loud instead of letting her do the hard part for him. “I wanted him to say it,” she told Christine. She was not going to make it easy for him. Hence the thorn. Hence the knife.

The “New Beginning” That Kept Her Hoping

Stubbornness was only half the story. Meri also admitted that Kody kept giving her hope — including when he framed the family’s 2018 move from Las Vegas to Flagstaff, Arizona, as a fresh chapter.

“I felt like I had a lot of hope that OK, maybe this is a new beginning because he talked about that,” Meri explained, according to OK!.

It is a painful detail when you remember the timeline. Meri and Kody legally divorced in 2014 so he could marry Robyn Brown and adopt her three older children, but they remained spiritually married — and Meri kept believing the relationship could still be fixed. The “new beginning” never came. What came instead, years later, was Meri finally walking away after Christine and Janelle Brown had already left.

Christine Says Meri Was “Grossly Misled”

Christine did not let the moment pass without her own verdict. She told Meri that, looking back at the early years, she felt Meri and Kody were “just terrible to each other” — and that revisiting the past has been painful because she believes Meri was “grossly misled.”

That is a striking thing for Christine to say, given where the two women stand now. And Meri, for her part, admitted something just as raw: she regrets not supporting Christine when Christine decided to end her own marriage to Kody.

Two ex-wives, sitting together, finally naming what went wrong — not just with Kody, but with each other. It is the kind of honesty fans waited more than a decade to hear.

Strength or Wasted Years? Fans Are Split

Here is where the fandom divides, and it divides hard.

One camp says Meri’s stubbornness was power. She refused to be the one who ended it on Kody’s terms, refused to hand him the innocent-party narrative, and walked away only when she was ready — on her own timeline, with her own business and her own life waiting. In this reading, the thorn in his side was strategy, not surrender.

The other camp says the price was far too high. Years spent waiting on a “new beginning” that never arrived, years of being, in Christine’s words, grossly misled — all to deny Kody a narrative he got anyway. In this reading, stubbornness cost Meri the very years she can never get back.

Both camps can point to the same quotes and feel completely right. That is what makes this confession so explosive: Meri did not give fans a villain or a hero. She gave them a woman who knew the truth, stayed anyway, and is only now explaining why.

So where do you land? Was Meri’s refusal to leave first a power move — the thorn in Kody’s side he deserved — or did stubbornness cost her years she will never get back? Pick a side and defend it in the comments.
