“Trapped at Age 8.” That was the title TLC gave the very first episode of I Am Shauna Rae — and on January 11, 2022, it was the most honest introduction on television that night. A 22-year-old from Long Island, 3-foot-10 and about 50 pounds, looked into the camera and said she was tired of being treated like a child. Six Tuesdays later, the season was over. No breaking news here — just the six episodes that started everything, in order.
January 11, 2022: “Trapped at Age 8” and the Jersey Shore
The premiere had one job: explain who Shauna Rae was. At six months old, her mom Patty noticed a bump on the back of her head. Doctors found a grade 4 malignant glioma, a cancerous brain tumor. Surgery and about three and a half years of chemotherapy followed, until she was declared cancer-free. The treatment saved her life and changed it: her pituitary gland was, in her own words, “rendered almost dormant,” and her body stopped making enough growth hormone. At 16, doctors diagnosed pituitary dwarfism — and told her she would stay 3-foot-10. The episode stayed lighter: a Jersey Shore day trip, and the everyday obstacles of dating and drinking at 22 while looking much younger.

The Cherry Tattoo, the Matchmaker and the Blind Date
Episode two, “The Girl With the Cherry Tattoo” (January 18, 2022), set the show’s engine running: Shauna wants out, her parents are not ready. She heads to a brewery with friends while Patty and Mark struggle with letting go, and Patty — worried about her dating life — suggests a matchmaker. The tattoo of the title was “Poppy,” for her late grandfather, who loved gambling and chocolate-covered cherries: a cherry cocktail and an ace of hearts. “Love at First Height” (January 25) put the family in a bridal shop for Tara’s wedding, where nothing fit Shauna — then sent her to the gym and onto a blind date arranged by her mom’s matchmaker.
The Farm, the Argument and the Puppets’ Return
Episode four, “Get Off Your High Horse” (February 1, 2022), is the rewatchers’ favorite. Shauna gets hands-on experience at a farm and runs straight into her own limitations. She asks Tara for advice, and the sisters argue. Mark and Rylee also put on their first puppet show in years with WhoBuddiez, Mark’s puppet troupe.

Pittsburgh, a Tiara and the Halloween Finale
Episode five, “Cranky at the Club” (February 8, 2022), handed the wheel to the sisters: Shauna and Rylee threw Tara a bachelorette party in Pittsburgh that ended in a heated argument at a bar. Then came the finale, “Growing When You Can’t Grow” (February 15, 2022): Halloween, a hunt for a costume that actually fits a 3-foot-10 woman with an adult body, and a family dinner where Shauna made what TLC billed as a life-changing announcement.
How a One-Scene Part in Lisey’s Story Built the Show
TLC did not discover Shauna Rae — acting found her first. Her earliest screen credit dates to the 2018 short film Good For One Free Hug, and in 2021 she appeared as a Young Girl in one episode of the Apple TV+ miniseries Lisey’s Story, Season 1, Episode 8. According to Heightline, that small appearance caught the attention of a TLC producer — who built a show around her. When the trailer dropped, Shauna told E! Online it felt like she went “worldwide almost overnight.”

Both seasons stream on Discovery+ and HBO Max, and on Philo and DIRECTV Stream. The show ran for two seasons, from 2022 to 2023, with its final episode airing on October 1, 2023. Since then, TLC has never officially canceled the show — and it has never announced a Season 3 either.
So here is the Season 1 question for the group. If a first-time viewer could watch just one of these six — the Jersey Shore premiere or the Halloween finale — which would you pick, and what would it prove about Shauna Rae?
