It is almost impossible to picture Say Yes to the Dress without Randy Fenoli. The raised eyebrow, the honest verdicts, the famous question at the end of every appointment — he has been the face of Kleinfeld Bridal on TV since the show first aired in 2007. So here is the part that still shocks fans: when the producers first asked him to be on the show, Randy said no.
“The first day they asked me to be on the show, I said, ‘No,'” he admitted in an interview with Swooon ahead of Season 23. “I don’t even watch reality TV. There’s no way I’m going to do this.”

The Man Who Almost Wasn’t There
Thankfully for all of us, he changed his mind. Fenoli filmed the first season, the show became a global phenomenon, and his line — “Are you saying yes to the dress?” — became part of wedding culture itself. He has now appeared in every single season for nearly two decades, and by his own account, he misunderstood the show at first just like plenty of viewers did.
“When I first started the show, I thought, it’s a reality TV show. It’s a lot of fluff… until I really got to understand the show,” he said, comparing it to The Golden Girls — a show that makes you laugh while quietly tackling subjects that are, in his words, “controversial and heart-wrenching.” Anyone who has cried over a stranger’s fitting knows exactly what he means.
The Rule He Never Broke: No Veil, No Bride
Every fan knows Randy has one rule he treats almost like a law of physics. For years he has insisted that a bride without a veil is “just a pretty girl in a white dress.” Consultants have heard it. Brides have heard it. Some have pushed back — and Randy has almost never budged.

The Dresses, Part Two: Pnina Tornai Rules the Same Floor
Across the salon, one other name makes Kleinfeld brides lose their minds: Pnina Tornai, the floor’s most dramatic designer. Three of hers — the vote now runs 1 through 6.

The Bride Who Changed It
Among the brides of Season 23 — a season that also featured a non-binary bride and a quadriplegic bride — was a bride living with trichotillomania, a condition that causes hair loss. For her, the veil question was never about fashion. It was about confidence, coverage, and walking down the aisle feeling like herself.
Randy has teased that what happened at the end of her appointment was a first: he got her into a veil and created something he believes has never been created in bridal before, right there on the set, in front of the cameras. He would not spoil the details — but this is a man who has fitted thousands of brides across 23 seasons. If Randy Fenoli says he had never seen it done before, fans should believe him.
And notice what actually changed. The rule did not disappear because a bride argued louder. It bent because Randy finally met a bride whose story made the rule feel too small. That is the version of Randy fans have stayed loyal to for 18 years: firm on taste, soft where it counts.
Why Randy Is Never Leaving
If you are worried the show might one day hand the jacking-up duties to someone else, relax. Fenoli has appeared in every season since 2007 and says he has no plans whatsoever to step away. “There’s no way I can’t be a part of it,” he said of the show, adding that he was glad the series waited two years to return because the world needs a happy ending right now.
It is hard to argue with him. In a franchise full of spin-offs, salons and consultants who come and go, Randy is the constant — the one person who connects the very first Kleinfeld appointment ever filmed to the newest bride walking through those doors.
The Debate: Is He Right About the Veil?
So now the question lands where it belongs — with the fans. Was Randy’s oldest rule right all along? Does the veil complete the bride, turning a beautiful dress into an actual wedding moment? Or was the rule always due for an exception, and the best consultants are the ones who know when to break their own rules?
Team Veil will say the Season 23 moment proves Randy’s point: even the bride who seemed least likely to wear one ended up in a veil. Team No-Veil will say it proves the opposite — that the dress, and the woman in it, were the moment all along.
Whose side are you on? And be honest: could anyone else on this show have pulled off both saying no to the job and rewriting his own rulebook on camera?
And one more vote before you go: of the six gowns above, which one gets your yes? Drop the number — 1 through 6 — and defend it like you are standing on the Kleinfeld floor.
