Stop Blaming the Moms: The Sons Are the REAL Villains of I Love a Mama’s Boy

Laila, Shekeb and Emily — the triangle at the heart of the show's biggest blame game.

For four seasons, fans have aimed all their fury at the mothers of I Love a Mama’s Boy. Laila, Nancy, Kelly, Tina — say the names and the comments explode. But rewatch the worst moments: the moms may say the awful thing, but the sons are the ones who do it. The mothers propose. The sons dispose. That makes the men the real villains of this franchise.

Matt Chose the Coward’s Way Out — Kelly Didn’t Cheat for Him

Kelly and Matt McAdams — the bond Brittany was up against.

Start with the franchise icon, Matt McAdams. His mother Kelly gave us the graveyard birthday trips and the “I don’t want to share my son” era. But Kelly never told Matt to cheat on Brittany Taylor. Matt did that entirely on his own — dating Brittany while seeing other women, then admitting on The Sarah Fraser Show that he took “a coward’s way out” of the breakup. The messiest breakup in show history was Matt’s own doing.

Shekeb Let “Momma Gonna Die” Win

Nobody proves the point better than Shekeb. Laila’s three words — “Momma gonna die” — are the show’s most quoted line, fired when Emily Chu begged Shekeb to move out. But the line only worked because Shekeb let it work. He stayed. He let his mother kick Emily out after she shared their moving plans. He sat silent while Laila brought Yussra, the woman she was pushing on him, to a dinner party to question Emily’s cooking. Laila wrote the script, but Shekeb performed every scene of it. Emily fought for three seasons. Shekeb fought for nobody, not even himself.

Roberto Asked His Own Wife for the DNA Test

Then there’s the scene fans will never forgive — and they’ve been forgiving the wrong person. Nancy pushed for a paternity test on her own granddaughter Kimi, yes. But Nancy didn’t ask Kristy. Roberto did. He demanded proof about their own child. The result came back 99.99 percent his, and Kristy walked out anyway with the coldest line the show ever aired: “Who is she that I have to prove to her?” A husband with his wife’s back would have told his mother no. Roberto chose his mother’s doubt over his wife’s dignity — and that nearly ended his marriage.

Josh, Tre and Jason: The Crime of Saying Nothing

The rest of the cast commits the same crime more quietly. Josh has spent more than a decade wedged between his mother Tina and his wife Janelle, sharing a house with both, because he refuses to draw a line. Tre kept refusing to pick a side until his relationship with Abbey crumbled and the choice was made for him. Jason let Annette hijack his wedding to Justina until his fiancée called her “the wedding planner from hell.” On this show, neutrality is just letting someone else bleed while you watch from the middle of the sofa.

The Verdict: The Moms Are Loud — The Sons Held the Power

None of this makes the mothers innocent — Laila’s ambushes, Nancy’s DNA demand, Kelly’s graveyard trips were all real and outrageous. But outrage is not power. In every triangle, the son held the one vote that mattered, and he almost always spent it on his mother. The moms are the villains fans love to hate. The sons are the villains who actually did the damage.

Season 5 remains unconfirmed, according to reports. So settle it: which son is the guiltiest — Matt the cheater, Shekeb the bystander, Roberto the messenger, or Josh the man who never chose? Team Sons or Team Moms — no fence-sitting allowed.
