Christine Says Robyn ‘Planted’ Meri’s Divorce — and Meri’s One-Line Reply Says It All

“No, you’re not.” That was Christine Brown Woolley’s answer, on camera, to the story Meri Brown has told for more than a decade: that divorcing Kody Brown in 2014 was her own idea. On Sunday night’s Sister Wives, Christine said she believes the idea was planted — and she named the person she thinks planted it.

Season 21, Episode 5, “The Stench of a Failed Marriage,” aired Sunday, November 1, at 10 p.m. ET on TLC. The moment setting the fandom on fire is a memory from a living room in Lehi, Utah, that Christine says she has carried for years — and finally said out loud.

Christine told Meri she remembers sitting in Meri’s living room in Lehi, listening to Robyn Brown talk about how “beautiful” it would be for a first wife to give up her legal divorce so her husband could marry a new wife and adopt her children.

“I think it was kind of planted,” Christine said. “I remember specifically a couple of times we’d be in a conversation where Robyn mentioned it.” Her reaction at the time, as she tells it now, was disbelief: “What are you suggesting here? You think Meri should legally divorce Kody?” Then, Christine said, it happened anyway — and Meri insisted it was her idea. Christine’s verdict: “No, you’re not.” (That is a belief about a years-old conversation, not proof; Robyn and Kody, who no longer film, have not answered it.)

Meri’s Answer: “It Worked Very Well in His Favor”

Meri neither agreed nor shut her down. “I don’t know if they had a plan. If it wasn’t a plan, it worked very well in his favor,” she said. Then: “I definitely would have done things differently when I divorced him had I been legally married to him still. I think he absolutely benefited, so he can call himself lucky.”

Remarkable from the woman who in 2014 gave up a legal marriage held since 1990 so Kody could marry Robyn and adopt her children. She has always called it a sacrifice — “I thought it was for the good of the family” — then counted the cost, including warmth that lasted only “maybe a month.” The previous episode adds sting: Meri said then that Kody was “just trying to push me out.”

Janelle Breaks the Tie — Sort Of

Janelle Brown did not pick a clean side — which, for Janelle, is its own kind of answer. “I think there was way more going on,” she said. “Whether they were willing to admit it or not. I think they kind of were wanting to go in that direction.” She claims no plan seen — only a current pulling toward the outcome Kody and Robyn wanted. Christine’s contrast with her own exit said the rest: “I loved my leaving process. I saw that he just drifted you along.”

The Same Night, Three Rings Go Into the Fire

Per the official synopsis, the episode also saw Meri and Christine find common ground, Janelle try beekeeping with Maddie, and the three ex-wives melt down their wedding rings together. After Christine’s claim, that ritual reads differently: three women comparing notes about how those marriages actually ended.

Fans Have Already Picked a Side

Under TLC’s clips, fans are saying the show finally confirmed what they suspected for years — one wrote that it was obviously a plan all along, arguing Kody never needed Meri’s divorce to adopt Robyn’s children. Another put it simply: now that Kody and Robyn are gone from filming, the ex-wives can finally talk openly.

Skeptics note Meri herself has always insisted it was her idea, and a living-room memory is not evidence of a scheme. Others say it does not matter who first said it — what matters is who benefited, and Meri just told us who that was. So: Team Planted, or Team Her Idea? Next Sunday, November 8, Episode 6, “Therapy By Fire,” sees the three women burn jewelry from their marriages, per TVmaze. Tell us your side first.
