“Spirit, are you here?” Whitney Thore asked, holding a dangling necklace over a table in Salem, Massachusetts. The necklace started to spin. Then came the question that stopped every longtime fan cold: “Is my mom here?”
Nine days before My Big Fat Fabulous Life Season 14 premieres on Tuesday, November 10 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on TLC, that Salem moment feels less like a detour and more like the beginning of everything that followed. Before Charlotte, before the whirlwind engagement, before the “brand new” life Whitney keeps promising in the Season 14 trailer, there was a grieving daughter in a witchy town, asking for a sign — and, according to the people in the room, getting one.
The Night in Salem
The scene aired in Season 13, during a girls’ trip to Boston and Salem. Whitney and her friends traded what episode listings bluntly called her “baby blues” for ballet, ghosts, and a séance, meeting new witchy friends in a town built for exactly this kind of soul-searching. She was, in the listings’ words, “looking for a sign of what to do with her life.”
In an exclusive clip TLC shared with Parade ahead of the July 29, 2025 episode, the séance leader asked what Whitney’s mother would be holding in her arms, patting. Whitney answered without hesitation: “A cat.” Then she asked out loud — “Mommy, do you have a cat with you?” — and the leader answered yes. Her friend Ashley Baynes asked the follow-up every fan was thinking: “Is it Henchi?” Henchi, Whitney’s beloved 17-year-old cat, had died that January.
What Babs (Seemingly) Said
The séance leader confirmed it: Babs and Henchi were, in her words, “very much so together.” Whitney’s reaction was not performative awe. It was relief. “It’s really just all I needed to hear,” she told producers in a confessional. “My mom and Henchi are together. I can just picture him purring on her lap and them being so happy together. And that’s just all I need to know in life.”
Let’s be honest about what this was — and wasn’t. A séance is not proof of anything, and no one in that room could prove Babs was speaking. What it provably was: the most emotionally open Whitney had been on camera in a long time, grieving a mother who died in December 2022, in front of friends, without a joke to hide behind.

The Altar, the Old Patterns, and the Friends Who Spoke Up
Salem did not just give Whitney a séance. Episode listings show her building an altar to manifest love and a baby ahead of her second attempt at artificial insemination — and, just as importantly, her longtime friends calling her out for “slipping into old patterns.” Ashley openly doubted the move — “You’re just going to uproot and go with your fun new friends?” — and Jessica Powell asked her point-blank: “I’m asking you, are you leaving?” By the end of Season 13, Whitney had signed a lease in Salem, according to Parade — proof the town was never just a girls’ trip. But Salem was a chapter, not a home.

From Salem to Charlotte: Coincidence or Sign?
Here is where the fandom splits, and honestly, both sides have a case. Team Sign looks at the timeline — a woman asks the universe for direction, builds an altar to manifest love and a baby, and within a year finds a reconnection that becomes an engagement — and says the séance was the turning point. Team Coincidence says Whitney did the real work herself: she left a rut in Greensboro, tried a new city, and made a choice, and no spinning necklace deserves the credit.
What Salem undeniably changed was the question Whitney was asking. Before Salem, the question was whether she would ever leave Greensboro behind. After Salem, it became what kind of life she actually wanted. Season 14 is the answer playing out in real time. So as November 10 approaches, remember the necklace. Was that a message from Babs, or was it Whitney finally giving herself permission? Tell us which team you’re on — Team Sign or Team Coincidence — because nine days out, that answer says everything about how you’ll watch Season 14.
