Who Holds the Wallet? 5 Money Fights That Broke I Love a Mama’s Boy Couples
Love might be free, but on I Love a Mama’s Boy, somebody always pays — usually the girlfriend. The show’s ugliest fights were never really about laundry or breakfast. They were about money: who earns it, who controls it, and who gets a vote on spending it. With TLC still silent on Season 5, according to reports, here are the five money fights that did the most damage.
1. The $25 Ring Budget — Shahid and Dia

Shahid and his mother Dia share their finances so closely that Shahid described their bond by saying, “We used to be one.” Dia does his laundry, and she openly suspected his girlfriend Nylah’s intentions toward his money.
Then Shahid went ring shopping for Nylah and admitted he was nervous his mother would find out. “My mom gave me a budget of like $25 today,” he confessed. “Does it look like I can afford [a ring] right now?” A grown man, shopping for his future, on a daily allowance from his mother.
2. The $40,000 Ring vs. the $500 Test — Shekeb, Emily and Laila
Emily Chu named her price for commitment: a $40,000 engagement ring. Shekeb was stunned, so he asked his mother. Laila had a better idea: skip the engagement ring and test Emily with a $500 promise ring instead. Accept it gracefully, and she truly loved him. Complain, and she was only after his money.
Shekeb agreed, bought the ring, and hid his mother in the bushes to watch. Emily threw the ring away, destroyed the picnic, and later found Laila proudly wearing that same $500 ring. The real proposal never came, and according to reports, the couple have since split for good.
3. The House Mom Built — Kelly, Matt and Kim
Kelly McAdams did not just live with her son Matt. She built him and his fiancee Kim a house on her own property — then stayed firmly at the center of their lives. Kim dated Matt for four years and got engaged, only to discover she had signed up for a three-person marriage with a landlord who never left.

When Mom builds the house, Mom keeps the keys.
4. The Florida House With No Room for Mom — Josh, Tina and Janelle
Josh McAloon had never lived apart from his mother Tina — not even after 12 years of marriage to Janelle. So when Josh and Janelle bought a house in Florida, Janelle drew the line the show had been waiting for: Mom can visit, but she cannot move in.
“Doesn’t matter what I want, it’s what Tina wants,” Janelle lamented, before the fight boiled over into the show’s most quoted standoff: “You are not his wife!” against Tina’s “I came first.” A house purchase should have been a fresh start. Instead it became a bidding war for Josh’s loyalty.
5. The Wedding Mom Wanted to Buy — Jason, Justina and Annette
Justina finally got to plan her long-overdue wedding to Jason — only to discover the wedding planner from hell was her future mother-in-law. Annette pushed a Vegas wedding Justina did not want, steered Jason toward a paisley prom tux, “gifted” Justina a bright red belt for her wedding dress, and proposed a mother-son tango.
Every dollar of that wedding became a vote on who the marriage belonged to. According to reports, the wedding went forward and the two are still together — but every bride watching knew the real question: if Mom pays for the wedding, does she also get a vote on the marriage?
So who should hold the wallet — the mom who raised him, the son who earns it, or the partner building a life with him? Is a shared mother-son budget protection or control? Is a $500 promise ring a fair test or an insult? Pick your side and defend it below — because on this show, the person who controls the money has always controlled the relationship.
