Shauna Rae’s Tattoos, Explained: Every Piece of Ink and the Story It Carries

Shauna Rae, ink on show — every tattoo she has carries a story she chose herself.

There is one photograph that sums up Shauna Rae better than any confession-cam speech: Shauna in the tattoo chair, her mom Patty holding her hand, a tattoo artist behind her, and fresh ink on her forearm. She was not proving anything to the cameras. She was collecting another chapter of her life — in ink.

Shauna Rae has four tattoos, and she has a rule about every single one: it has to mean something. In a confessional on I Am Shauna Rae, she said she “would never” get a tattoo that didn’t mean anything. Here is every piece of ink fans know about — and the story each one carries.

The Elephants That Carry Her Cancer Story

Start with the biggest one, in every sense. Shauna’s back tattoo shows two elephants sitting outside, connecting their trunks to form a ribbon — a ribbon that honors her cancer journey and how far she has come.

That journey started before she could walk. At six months old, Shauna was diagnosed with a malignant glioma, a cancerous brain tumor. Surgery followed, then three years of chemotherapy. The treatment saved her life and changed it: at 16, doctors diagnosed pituitary dwarfism, and she stopped growing at 3-foot-10. The elephants are not decoration. They are the whole origin story, worn where she cannot even see it — which somehow makes it more honest.

The Doves From Grandma’s Jewelry Box

On her forearm sit two doves, based on a jewelry box her late grandmother gifted her. It is the quietest tattoo of the four and maybe the most tender: no punchline, no provocation, just a grandmother’s gift made permanent.

Fans who only know Shauna from her loudest moments miss this side of her — the sentimental one, the keeper of family objects. The doves say she carries the people she loves with her, literally, wherever she goes.

Cute and Cuddly — and Ferocious

Then there is the koala. Shauna’s rib tattoo shows a koala bear, and the meaning, according to Shauna and her parents Patty and Mark, is pure Shauna: she can be “cute and cuddly” but also “ferocious” at the same time.

Anyone who watched two seasons of the show knows exactly what that means. This is the woman who charmed a room one minute and shut down a condescending stranger the next. The koala is the duality the whole fandom argues about — soft or fierce — answered in a single image.

The Cherry Cocktail for Grandpa

The fourth tattoo is the one cameras actually followed. In Season 1, Shauna consulted a tattoo artist about a piece titled “Poppy” in honor of her grandfather — a man who loved gambling and chocolate-covered cherries. The design took revisions: her vision for the art, the placement, and her size all proved tricky, according to reports.

Patty worried aloud that the tattoo, mixed with Shauna’s “cursing,” would confuse onlookers about her age even more. Shauna went ahead anyway. The final result: a cherry cocktail and an ace of hearts card — a toast to grandpa, and a wink at the gambler he was.

The One Rule She Never Broke

Here is the part that silences the “she just wants to look older” crowd. Shauna has admitted the ink might help her look older — but that was never the point. She told People: “It may help me look older, but at the end of the day, I have my tattoos for personal reasons. I have them to help me carry on moments in my life.”

She has also said that getting tattoos against her mom’s wishes made her feel more “independent” as a young woman. Mark, for his part, reportedly wished she would stop wearing “provocative clothes” to overcompensate for her height. Shauna’s answer, then and now, is the same: she dresses — and inks — as she pleases.

Three years after the final episode aired on October 1, 2023, TLC has never officially canceled the show or announced a Season 3. But Shauna’s story never needed a renewal to continue. It is written on her skin, in four chapters, and she is the only author.

So here is the question that splits every tattoo debate in the group: which piece of ink hits hardest — the elephants, the doves, the koala, or the cherry cocktail? And the bigger fight: Team More Ink says a fifth tattoo is overdue — what should it be? Team Four Is Enough says the collection is complete, and adding more would dilute the meaning. Pick your side, and defend your ink.
