Blink and you will miss it: the kid viewers met as the sensitive, tech-obsessed little brother is about to turn 21. Alex Johnston, born November 15, 2005, celebrates his 21st birthday just two days before 7 Little Johnstons Season 18 premieres on Tuesday, November 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TLC. If the last few weeks are any guide, he is walking into the new season as the Johnston fans cannot stop talking about.

It is a slow takeover: a high school graduation, a long-distance relationship that survived the distance, a promise ring, a college path, and now engagement talk that has split the fandom down the middle.

From the Back Seat to the Driver’s Seat

For longtime viewers, independence has always been Alex’s measuring stick. Back in Season 3, TLC aired an episode literally titled “License to Drive,” following the Johnston kids as they learned to get behind the wheel. Every Georgia-to-Ohio trip to see his girlfriend since has been another mile away from the back seat.

Life After High School: College, Content and Questions

Alex graduated from high school in May 2024, alongside his sister Emma, a milestone their mother celebrated publicly on Instagram. Since then, according to reports, he has been studying at Middle Georgia State University, with an expected graduation in 2028, and he launched his own YouTube channel in early 2025.

That quieter part of his story is why some fans push back on the engagement chatter. On the show, Alex has talked openly about his future with Allie but said little about a career plan, and his small origami business is a hobby, not a job.

Allie’s Big Week, and Alex’s Loudest Cheer

The freshest chapter arrived just this week. According to TV Season & Spoilers (October 27, 2026), Allie Smith earned the American FFA Degree, a top honor in the youth agriculture organization, and the Johnston family publicly celebrated her achievement. Alex was not there in person, but he made sure his congratulations were impossible to miss, rushing to the comments to cheer her on.

It was a small moment that said a lot. For years, Allie’s story has been filtered through Alex: the girlfriend from Ohio, the farm visits, the prom. This week she had a headline of her own, and Alex’s role was the proud boyfriend in the comments.

The Engagement Talk Splitting the Fandom

Then there is the talk that lit the fuse. In a true-or-false session filmed with his siblings, Alex was asked whether he hoped to get engaged to Allie sometime next year and eventually move to her family’s farm to work there. According to TV Season & Spoilers, he did not dodge the question, and fans immediately took sides.

The backstory matters. In a December 2025 episode, Alex revealed he had given Allie a promise ring for Christmas. Jonah has even said on camera that he would be unhappy if Alex got engaged before him. No engagement has been announced. What is real is the debate: is Alex ready to build a life with the person he loves, or is he talking about forever before he has built a career to stand on?

Here is the thing nobody disputes: the kid who once cried when things got overwhelming is now the Johnston making the boldest plans of anyone. He is no longer a side character in his parents’ house. He is the lead in his own story, and Season 18 is his to lose.

So here is our question to you: Are you Team Alex Is Ready, cheering him on toward an engagement and a life on the farm, or Team Build First, saying he should finish college and lock down a career before any ring? Drop your take below.
